I was trading emails with fellow Minnesota Football Card Collector and new TheFootballCardBlog.com reader Daryl last night and this morning, and he dropped a bit of a big one on us when he said:

"I did go to [unnamed local card shop] a couple weeks ago it was the only card store I was able to find and I bought a pack of 2008 Sage Hit and pulled a Matt Ryan Gold Autograph out of it."

2008 Sage HIT Hobby BoxSomehow, 2008 Sage Hit hit the shelves in the last couple weeks, and I didn't even know it.  Granted, Sage Hit has never been something I've bought, other than a few packs mixed in with the re-packed retail sucker boxes I've bought--but you know what this news meant--I happened to find myself in the neighborhood of said unnamed card shop this afternoon, and grabbed a box.

After the kerfuffle over the Beckett Video Box Break of two boxes of Upper Deck Exquisite, one would hope that Beckett would tread very carefully with their next round of box breaks.  And while they do play it somewhat safe, by opening a box of 2008 Press Pass, which is significantly less impactful on the wallet than Exquisite, and point out explcitly that it was taken "off the production line at the printing facility north of Dallas," some people may still ask a few questions...

The first question someone may ask would be on the timing--Press Pass isn't shipping until next week, but they get the box to open early.  Doesn't particularly bother me, as they're in the press, and it's a good move by the Press Pass folks to build some buzz early.  But given the kerfuffle, I am a bit surprised that they went for a break of product that won't hit the public for a bit yet.

The second question is that of star player cards--a question that will likely be asked of every single future Beckett Box Break, given the Adrian Peterson 1/1 pull.  In the box of 2008 Press Pass, they pulled two Matt Ryan parallels (one #'d to 500), a Matt Ryan jersey (#'d to 150), and a Darren McFadden insert, along with a handful of other likely first round picks.

Given Matt Ryan's status as likely being the first QB taken in the draft, some might raise eyebrows at this.  Of course, in a product like Press Pass, it's tough to say that's not somewhat normal.

In the end, I'd say this break shouldn't raise too much of an uproar.  But there will likely be some collector's who disagree...

Of course, the much bigger news out of all of this in my eyes is that the 2008 Football Card Season is just around the corner!

Got the itch again today--stopped by my local card shop to check out some cards that the owner had called me about (baseball related), and grabbed a few Bowman Chrome Football rookies that I didn't need, but were cheap ($1 for 11), and could turn out ok, but it left me with a desire to bust something.

Since I knew I was heading to my local faceless giant corporate retailer, I decided I'd see what they had--fully expecting that I would probably end up with more Topps Heritage Baseball.

As I responded to Joey last week, after my SP Authentic experience I wanted to open some more cards--without the big price tag--and I was kind of feeling left out of the Topps Heritage craze, so I stopped by my local retailer and snagged a box.  I decided to grab a box of Bowman Football too, as I'm still a handful of cards short of the low numbered Bowman Chrome set.

So what did my first foray into 2008 baseball net?
2008 Heritage Gum
Lots of big sticks of gum.  Oh, and a Ryan Braun refractor, a handful of rookies (Armando Galarraga, Brandon Jones, Clint Sammons, Brons Sardinha or Seth Smith mean anything to anyone?), one Twin (two if you count Livan Hernandez in his Diamondbacks uniform), and one guy from my fantasy team (Jonathan Broxton).

Kind of fun, but to be honest, I'm not real impressed by the cards--maybe it's what they were going for, but a lot of the pictures looked to me like I could have taken them with my digital camera.

March 27th, 2008 Busting Boxes 3 Comments

The box of SP Authentic that I picked up on eBay about a week and a half ago arrived yesterday, after what seemed like forever (but was actually a perfectly reasonable shipping time).

This was the first box of SP Authentic I've ever bought for any sport...and, to be perfectly honest, probably the last.

Had to stop by the local retail giant tonight to grab some snacks for the poker game, and big shock, had to look at the card aisle, and even though I was at a different location of the same giant retailer, not much caught my eye--at least football wise.

But baseball wise, I've been fighting the temptation to grab a box of the 2007 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects for some time now--I think part of it has to do with the name (Draft Picks & Prospects is one of my favortite football sets), and part of it is my prospecting nature.  So I gave into tempation.

Oh, and I bought another one of those #$%^&* tins of mixed football too.
